If you were to listen to popular consensus, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the addition of the Batmobile was a preposterous mistep for the series, comparable to the time when Bubsy met 3D. It'd be dishonest to pretend that my thinking about the game hasn't changed in the months since – I enjoyed it much more in the moment than my memory allows me to believe – but on one point I still stand against the critical tide. I was mid-way through my introductory review paragraph when Warner pulled the game from digital shelves. Is it any good? While the game was unavailable, there seemed little point in telling you Wot I Think but I did in fact play this latest Batventure in its entirety when it first released. Don't get me started on how pissed I am about the PS2-exclusive Splinter Cell mission that's effectively lost content because of how inconvenient it is to play that version over the Xbox or PC versions. There's been so much talk about Batman: Arkham Knight but one question has been left unanswered, at least round these parts. So at no point during this time was there really a definitively "best" version and you could argue there still isn't because the MCC version is missing effects from the original Xbox version and has an incorrect texture for Keyes so any campaign purists are still relegated to the original Xbox version.Įdit: At least WB updated this to give out the outfits even if they still have a mode people aren't going to be able to play in ten years when Sony decides to drop backwards compatibility again. In 2011, the 360 version came out with an extra graphics mode (cool!) and copy-pasted Reach multiplayer instead of the actual CE MP (lame!). The original launched on Xbox in 2001, then the PC version with a flamethrower and extra multiplayer maps, but no co-op and missing graphical features, launched two years later in 2003. Halo CE was a mess until the MCC version, too. Technically, GoW UE is a remaster, not the original game, so the most complete version of the original game is now only playable via piracy.

Gears of War came out on PC a year after it launched on 360, but it had five full campaign chapters exclusive to the PC version for nine years (and was only playable for seven, as the only place to download GoW on PC was GFWL Marketplace, which died in 2014) until the Gears of War Ultimate Edition launched in 2016 and brought that content to console. Obviously, the games didn't come out on PlayStation at all, but they also liked to delay the PC port launches while giving them ~exclusive content~.

My "favorite" is Microsoft's old method where nobody wins.
